Diabetic Retinopathy

Advances in laser treatment of the ocular complications of diabetes has dramatically reduced the incidence of blindness due to diabetes. Diabetic Retinopathy is the number one cause of loss of vision among adults in the United States. Fortunately, based on years of research, much of this visual loss can now be prevented with laser treatment of the eye.

Regular eye examinations are the only way to identify the stages of Diabetic Retinopathy and initiate timely treatment. “With the advent of laser treatment, blindness due to diabetes is almost entirely preventable”, states Dr. Lisa Lintz. “All diabetic patients should realize that early changes may occur without any symptoms. Therefore is it essential to have regular eye exams and to control the blood sugar as optimally as possible.” Patients should feel free to discuss any of their concerns regarding diabetic changes in the eye with Dr. Colvard or Dr. Lintz.
