Femtosecond technology is the newest and most advanced technique for cataract surgery in the world today. This remarkable advance in engineering represents the culmination of over ten years of research and development and is designed to improve the precision of the cataract procedure.
The laser does not perform the entire procedure, but it performs certain key aspects of the procedure that benefit from the extraordinary level of precision, accuracy, and reproducibility that only the laser can provide. The Femtosecond laser allows the surgeon to perform the surgery without using a blade to cut the tissues, it helps to address the refractive state of the eye by gently improving the contour of the cornea, thereby helping to reduce astigmatism, and it creates a precise circular opening in the cataract that helps the surgeon remove all the cloudy cataract material.
The Femtosecond surgical laser delivers these tiny bursts of energy and couples this energy with a space-age imaging system that measures structures in the eye to a thousandth of a millimeter.
